Divine Rivals Review

By Rebecca Ross

Letters of Enchantment Book 1

Star rating: ★★★★☆

Blurb

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

My Thoughts:

I have been hearing about this book and haven't picked up up because I am primarily an adult romance reader. However, I recently enjoyed another young adult romantasy title so I thought I would give this one a try. I am not writing this review as a primarily romantasy or YA reader so if you are those things disregard my opinion. However, if you are an adult romance reader wondering if you should try this one this review might be for you.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I thought it was beautifully written and I enjoyed Iris and Kitt's relationship. I thought their connection that started in writing allowed them to connect honestly in a way that I enjoyed. I also thought Kit's willingness to follow Iris was romantic.

In terms of the world this book is set in I found it intriguing. Some of my favorite parts of this story were the beginning when Iris described things like stores that magically brought you what you wanted. I would have loved to hear more about the magic left in buildings and objects.

I was less interested in the war. It was giving World War I vibes but with magic. I was also guessing that the setting of this society was somewhere around that time frame. There was electricity but things were being typed on typewriters. Marriage was something discussed with 18-year-olds. The rules of their society would also have been something I would have liked to learn more about.

In my opinion, if you are a romance reader you will enjoy elements of this book but not all of it. For me, everything but the romance could have been taken out and I would have been equally happy with the book. I don't mind it being a series but I would have liked it to switch characters after book one so we could see someone else fall in love. I am fundamentally less interested in them fixing their world than the relationships people have. To me, this series is set up like a fantasy book not a romance. While there is a strong romantic subplot the events in the book are pushed by external elements and not the romantic plot. However, if you are someone who enjoys romance and are ok with the conflict being fantasyish then perfect you'll love this one!

🌶️🌶️ - This book contains one steamy scene that is not fade to black but it is also not incredibly detailed. It's sort of a IYKYK situation.
